Sheltering from the sweltering heat, Saigon style

Masks, wet towels, and swimming pools are among ways in which Saigonese are protecting themselves from the burning sun.

Saigon and other localities in southern Vietnam have been suffering from a heat wave recently, with temperatures reaching 36-37 degrees Celsius daily. It has also been reported that ultraviolet levels (UVs) in Saigon are consistently at 10-12 levels, posing high risks of sunburn.

"It's been really hot lately so many customers are buying dresses and coats to protect themselves from the sun. Normally I would only sell a piece or two, but I have been able to sell dozens of pieces a day of late," said an unnamed vendor.

"I came to Saigon to visit my child in Go Vap, but I didnt know it would be this hot, so I settled for a wet towel to protect myself," she said.

The water park is crowded these days, receiving 2000 customers daily and this goes up to 5,000 - 6,000 people during the weekends.
